VOL. 37  /  POWER PLAY

Thanks to our members who joined us at Meadow Park on Saturday! It was a treat to catch some rays and enjoy our favorites from Garnett's with you.

We are stacking the deck with events and giveaways this summer. It's going to be good! Read on for a clutch discount just in time for Father's Day shopping.

Concerts

on Concerts

Amp up your plans with a concert, or two. The X Ambassadors come to Innsbrook tomorrow night (you know “Unsteady” and “Renegades”). We love this high-energy trio, and they put on an incredible live show. Plus, Mikky Ekko is opening! See you there!

Then on the same night, it's our must-attend Friday Cheers, thanks to its Richmond theme. Part of the Festival of the River, banjoist and folk star Rhiannon Giddens is headlining, and you’ll also get a taste of No BS! Brass Band and the Richmond Symphony. Music to our ears.

Emperor's

New Brew

A low-key afternoon spent inside is crucial now and then. This Saturday, The VMFA premieres its riveting exhibit Napoleon: Power and Splendor, encompassing an impressive 200+ works of art (many brand new to the U.S.) that illustrate the importance of his reign.

Bring your history-buff friends, or make it a Father’s Day outing, and spend a few peaceful hours at the museum. We got a sneak preview, and trust us, you don't want to miss it.

Finish your chill day with a brew from Väsen Brewing Co., recently named one of the “50 of the Best New Breweries in the U.S." *Ahh*

Check off Father’s Day shopping with one of our go-tos. Gifted RVA creates pre-designed gift boxes for dads, baby showers, birthdays, housewarmings, weddings… basically anything you could need. You can even create your own box to fit your needs.

Why Gifted RVA is special: gifts are made locally and distributed nationwide. If you didn't know by now, we love spreading that Richmond love. We love how the items in these gifts paint a scene: you can picture yourself grilling with Dad or brightening his morning shave.

Getting back in the groove after a long weekend can be tough, but there are so many things to look forward to this weekend.

First on deck is our next Here. Happening – keep reading!

Here.

Happening

You’re invited to our next Here. Happening!

Join us at Meadow Park for one of our signature leisurely afternoon picnics.

Stop pre-picnic at Garnett’s for a sandwich (our favorite is The Manny) or salad, and they’ll even handily package it in a picnic basket for your trip across the street. Don't forget a slice of pie!

Other quick spots: Red Cap Patisserie for a sweet or savory meal, for heroes and pizza, or Shields Market for a country Greek salad and a Nightingale Ice Cream Sandwich to beat the heat.

We’re so looking forward to an easy, chill afternoon with you. Feel free to bring friends; we'll provide some surprises. (In the case of rain, DM us on Instagram, and we'll share our back-up location!)

Vitals:

Saturday, June 2 / 1-3pm
Meadow Park at Meadow St. & Park Ave.

Food

Festivities

Richmond foodies unite! Broad Appétit is this Sunday afternoon, and 70+ of the city’s best chefs will prepare mini dishes for $3 a pop.

The day's menu was just posted. Essential stops include last year's Broad Appétit winners Maple & Pine and Everyday Gourmet, while Pasture and Mama J's always deliver.

Insider Tip: Despite the bliss of endless food possibilities, it’s usually blazing hot. Take a break from the heat and visit some nearby retailers for AC - and retail therapy - between courses.

As if that wasn't enough food this weekend, you might stop by the Greek Food Festival for your annual share of yahni and baklava before Sunday to free yourself up for Broad Appétit. There's even a drive-thru now!

Meet

Kate Magee

Ever wonder where all our stunning Richmond photography comes from? Example: the stunner magnolia picture above. Meet our photographer, Kate Magee.

What we love most about Kate's work is that it has soul. Whether she's capturing our city, a business or a family, she finds something peaceful and true in her images.

If you're not already, follow Kate on Instagram. Or hire her to capture family memories or tell your company story with meaningful visuals.

Kate's work has sent her around the world, but however far she goes, she always gets pulled back home to Richmond. We're glad her talents are local to us.

Thank you, Kate, for allowing us to explore the best of Richmond through your images!

VOL. 35  /  SUMMER SKIES

This week is all about embracing old-school summertime memories. You’ll find both classics and hidden gems in the mix this week.

We want to know your hidden gems, so hit up our Here. Hotline and share your insights with us. You may just see your idea in a future issue...

Holiday weekend, here we come!

Ice Cream

Guide

At Charm School Social Club, things are different, in the best way. If you’re intoxicated by the smell of handmade waffle cones and intrigued by flavors like avocado and cereal milk, you’re in the right place.

One scoop is never enough. Morgan Botwinick, owner of Whisk Bakery, keeps it cool at her new shop, Scoop, with the Pint Club. Members get three pints per month – count us in! Your favorites from Whisk may take on new life in ice cream when Scoop opens, so stay tuned!

Gelati Celesti is a tried-and-true favorite, but if you’re looking for something more novel, visit NarWhal’s for a rolled ice cream treat.

Old-School

Drive-In

Spend an evening outside at Goochland Drive-In Theater’s new addition: The Grove. This secondary screen offers an alternative for movie-goers: outside, in-ground speakers. This allows you to recline on chairs or blankets outside your car while enjoying the double feature of the night!

Visit this weekend to see Life of the Party and Deadpool 2 at The Grove, or stick to the old-school drive-in at the main screen, showing Solo: A Star Wars Story and Avengers: Infinity War.

We were pleasantly surprised to see such a stacked lineup of major recent releases – and what an awesome way to view them!

Dark

Sky

For starry-eyed members, take a summertime classic next-level: visit a Dark Sky location for prime star-gazing.

The Dark Sky Places Program preserves and protects dark sites through responsible lighting policies – aka it’s the most picturesque way to view constellations through natural darkness and clear skies.

With only 25 certified parks in the world, we’re fortunate to have pristine, breathtaking skies within driving distance. The Staunton River State Park in Scottsburg is the first and only site in the state.

Our friend, Jonathan Piques, sparked this idea with this picture he took! Share your most-treasured starry shots with us by tagging @here.weekly after you visit!
