VOL. 18  /  REFRESH

Being cooped inside by cold weather got us thinking - our homes are our winter sanctuaries and maybe they could use a little refresh to get us through.

This week's warmer forecast inspired our writing, so read on for greenery and rooftop drinks!

Bridget Beari

Home Store

Is your home giving you more winter blues than the weather? Same. If so, you're in luck. The Bridget Beari Home Store just opened at 1528 W Cary, and their particular strength lies in warm textures. Think throws, pillows, sculptural pieces. Their eponymous line of paints, including hard-to-find metallics, is available for order. If we could only take home their enviable fiddle-leaf fig tree…

If their weekend hours are a little tight for you, consider popping in during the week over your lunch break and picking up at nearby Bombolini or Goatocado on the way.

Terrarium

Training

Another trick to get through to spring: introduce some green at home. Sustainable and seasonless succulents fit the bill this time of year.

Next Thursday, sweet Fan shop Strawberry Fields Flowers & Finds is offering a terrarium-building class. They'll provide all the materials, and you'll leave with a plant that means something and a few pearls of wisdom - like how to keep it alive once you're home.

Lewis Ginter also has a terrarium class later on in February!

Vitals:

Thursday, February 1 / 6-7:30pm strawberryfieldsflowersandfinds.com/product/terrarium-building-workshop

Rooftop

Pop-Up

There's a new rooftop game in town. The team at The Graduate is pretending it's spring this week, just like the rest of us. They're opening the Byrd House's rooftop bar Saturday evening only. No need for heat lamps, thanks to warm temps.

Embrace the fake spring vibe by picking a fresh and fruity cocktail -- we're moving on from hot chocolate and eggnog.

If you're ready to mentally skip straight to summer bonfires, grab a burger from the grill and a S'mores Nightingale Ice Cream Sandwich, The Graduate's signature flavor.

Last week's Here.Happening was a blast! There's already another on the horizon, so stay tuned.

If yesterday’s snow brought fears of another bomb cyclone, worry not. Warmer temps and an eclectic mix of happenings are on the horizon. Read on.

Oh, and that staycation we mentioned last week? New plan: February.

Sunday Night

Series

Hmm, we've covered a lot of red meat in recent weeks… it's Whole30-friendly, right? Anyways, there's good reason for this.

The team at alpine eatery Brenner Pass and sister café Chairlift seems to be settling in because they're spreading their capable wings. Chairlift is kicking off a Sunday dinner series. This week's theme: Parisian steakhouse, complete with a 21-day aged ribeye and grand macaron. Act fast; only a handful of seats are still available.

P.S. Have you made it to Chairlift's Friday night Raclette?!

Making Space

For Women

Perhaps you've heard rumblings of The Broad? Now is time to pay attention because February 2, The Broad opens its doors. Sorry gents, this one is ladies only.

With a mission to make space for women (timely, no?), The Broad will act as a workspace, a clubhouse, and a community center for its members. Don't mistake it for a co-working space. This is a real conversation starter.

The 2,500-square-foot space is being designed by Flourish Spaces, so you know it's going to be good. Check their Instagram for previews of the space. A few Founding Broad memberships are still available, giving you an advantageous rate.

Poe

Party

We love to boast of Richmond’s food, music and art. But we might talk about Richmond’s quirks the most. Like how it’s home to the world’s largest celebration of Edgar Allen Poe’s birthday. The Poe Museum’s Saturday shindig will be packed with live music, performances, tours - and cake, of course.

Tickets are only $8, so grab your literature-loving friends and take advantage of the museum and neighborhood walking tours. Stick around until midnight to toast to the man of honor with champagne in the Shrine!

Are you joining for our Here.Happening this Sunday?! It will warm you right up... This is also a private event, just for us; check the description below for the password.

The best reasons to venture out are below, whatever weather we're thrown.

Next week's newsletter: staycation! Who needs a break?

Jewish

Food Festival

Richmond's tradition of food festivals is strong, fortunately for all of us. We get tastes of so many cuisines while supporting key culture institutions in our community.

This weekend, the 11th Annual Richmond Jewish Food Festival at the Weinstein JCC is on! We like this as a dash-and-dine option - by that we mean: pay for your food and bring it home for lunch or dinner. Recommendation: order a little bit of everything, gather a group, and try it all! Be ready to patiently and graciously battle it out in the parking lot.

You're

Invited!

There are just a few spots left for our Braising for Beginners class this Sunday! We're pumped because Belmont Butchery is opening up their shop just for us. Given the bomb cyclone temperatures, how does a stew with fall-apart braised beef sound?

Come out and cozy up as we learn techniques from the experts, enjoy a generous sampling of recipes, and finish with a complementary beverage. Take the class, then plot a dinner party to show off your skills!

Tickets are $25; use password EatMeat.

Futures:

Work of Art

Speaking of skills, now is a great time to sign up for a class at the Visual Arts Center; they just released their spring catalog that offers more than 200 adult classes. Whether you're knocking out a new resolution or advancing an existing talent, you'll easily find a format that fits your schedule: multi-week, intensive, or First Friday samplers.

And the subjects? Learn how to use that fancy camera - very practical in our Instagram generation. Tintype photography or Super 8 Filmmaking: less practical, but serious fun. Screen printing and planters are so hot right now. And jewelry-making?!
