VOL. 15   /  RENEWAL

This week, we wanted to share a few sources of inspiration to fuel you well into the new year - including our first Here.Happening of 2018!

Also, a thought-provoking word on the value in making habits over resolutions, written by Richmond's Justin Earley.

Welcome to 2018!

Braising

for Beginners

For our first Here.Happening of 2018, Belmont Butchery is hosting a private Braising for Beginners class just for us!

We'll learn how to braise a few cuts of meat, try the recipes, and wash it all down with a well-paired beverage. Braising looks impressive but is actually pretty simple; let this class inspire your next cozy dinner party this winter.

Tickets are $25; use password EatMeat. This is a small class, but we have a bigger event coming up in a few weeks…

Freedom

Ruck

This Friday at 7:30am, Vic Wise and five men will set off from the Virginia War Memorial for Freedom Ruck. They will ruck (walk with weighted rucksacks) 100 miles in just 48 hours, all the way to Arlington National Cemetery, as a public display of thanks to the military. It's going to be brutally cold, heightening this already formidable challenge. And you thought you were cold...

Follow their progress on social media, cheer them on, and donate to The Navy SEAL Foundation.

Witnessing their commitment will make you wonder what you're really capable of. Answer: more.

Creative

Mornings

Creative Mornings is a monthly breakfast lecture series in which various amazing Richmonders touch on topics like compassion, transparency, magic. Look to this event as an opportunity to jolt your day-to-day with a fresh perspective.

Next up: Erin Mahone will address Anxiety on January 19. Tickets are free and include coffee/breakfast, but be sure to reserve one promptly the Monday before each event.

If you can't attend, videos of the lectures are available online afterward. A few of our favorites come from Mickael Broth, Evrim Dogu, Katherine Wintsch and Tim O'Toole & Will Ritter.

VOL. 14   /  NEW YEAR

2018 is almost here! We're starting to plan our calendar. Want to help? Email us your annual tradition, secret spot, most anticipated opening, favorite anything. We all have our own cool take on this city - and we want to hear yours!

Meanwhile, mark your calendar for our next Here. Happening on January 14. We'll share details in next week's volume.

Happy New Year!

New Year's Eve:

Celebration

There are two schools of thought on New Year's Eve: going out or staying in. Revelers first!

We confess we find there's room on the Richmond scene for a new major bash - and maybe we know people working on it for 2019. But to ring in 2018, a few ideas:

- Buskey Cider's bash will be a solid night, capping off with dollar drinks.

- The Brenner Pass team definitely knows how to throw a party, so check out their no-reservations-needed DJ and drinks situation from 11pm-2am. (pictured)

- The Hof is resurrecting Richmond's (somewhat odd) "ball rise."

New Year's Eve:

Hibernation

The secret to a productive hibernation is all in the snacks. If you're keeping it close to home this year, whether with a homemade bash, a coursed dinner, or 10pm bedtime, stop by these local purveyors first to ensure you're well-stocked.

Scene / PJs and fire on the flatscreen
Supper / Stella's Market take-out or Bombolini pasta, sauce & bread

Scene / Four courses for a couple or two
Supper / Bon Air Provisions or Yellow Umbrella for main course delicacies

Scene / Push back the furniture and crank the music
Supper / Party platters from Wegman's or Mosaic and a Red Eye Cookie Co. delivery

Futures:

She Ready

Comedian Tiffany Haddish is best known for her scene-stealing role in this year's raunchy and hilarious break-out movie Girls Trip. But if you've caught any of her many morning show or late night appearances, you know that this woman has personality in spades, leaving her hosts delightedly bewildered by her interviews.

And now we tell you that Haddish's #SheReady tour is coming to Richmond in March. 2018 has so much promise - why not add something to look forward to and snag some tickets to her show?

(We already bought ours… so drinks beforehand?)

We thought about taking a week off for the holidays, in that elusive pursuit of balance. But then it occurred to us that, with all the time off, this might be when you're most in need of a few pointed ideas.

Never fear; we're here for you. Onward!

Last Holiday

Hurrah

Close out your Christmas celebrations with a festive bar crawl from Rapp Session to Pasture.

Rapp Session has transformed to Christmas Session with epic holiday décor aggressively adorning the space and menu additions to match. Catch the tail end of their FeedMore-benefitting raffle this weekend.

The buzz is strong with Pasture's eggnog. Originally you had to know to order the cocktail off-menu, but their eggnog has gotten so popular that it's earned its rightful spot on the menu. There's even a vegan version. Pasture will be serving it through the New Year!

Winning

Move

Greenleaf's Pool Room is our secret weapon. With billiards, great food and a bar, there's almost no occasion or season where Greenleaf's isn't a great move. Date night, birthday parties, hang with the boys, hang with the girls - it's all good.

Specifically, though, we're thinking about that post-holiday lull, when all the festivities have wrapped up, when you have free time and no ideas. Greenleaf's is the move. Take the family or meet up with friends. Day or night. The pool tables offer some friendly competition regardless of talent. Have food and drink brought out to the tables or hover by the bar. Win-win.

Bubbles

Have you selected your champagne for New Year's Eve yet? There are those who already know the game and have that bottle reserved in advance, and those who just… don't. We're in the latter group.

If you're looking for a quick, thoughtful (and fun) education on the options, head to Barrel Thief tonight. You'll taste eight bottles of bubbly for a mere $25. And you know the pros at Barrel Thief won't steer you wrong!
