VOL. 7 / SATURDAY RACES

The Here. Hotline is live! What hidden Richmond gem should we be covering? Want to partner with us? Tell us more.

The Richmond Marathon is on Saturday. Surely you have a horse in that race, so find a spot along the course to cheer. Maybe the runners will inspire you to jog a couple miles this week? If not, head’s-up that traffic patterns will be nutty for a few hours as you move around the city.

Now, let's have some fun!

Nerd

Nite

Hey! This is tonight! After a short hiatus, Nerd Nite is back.

The Nerd Nite concept is pretty simple. A pair of speakers expound on any topic they particularly geek out on, the crowd asks some questions, and everyone’s eating and drinking.

At The Answer tonight, Nerd Nite is bringing back past favorite speakers: photographer Casey Templeton on NatGeo assignments and David Fleming on PSA-making secrets. Going off-script, two spoken word artists will perform to close the night.

Pretty sure nerding out is real cool, so come with.

East Coast

Covenant

Triple Crossing is bringing in a host of East Coast breweries for their one-day inaugural East Coast Covenant Beer Fest. You could cover a lot of ground in the short drive to Fulton Hill.

Go for the guaranteed 4 oz pours from each of 24 breweries (does this seem like a lot to anyone else?!) and meet the brewers themselves. Burial and Interboro are tops on our list. Plus, we hear there’s a Foam and TC collab?! Stay to explore Triple Crossing's new mural and for their house-made Neapolitan pizzas.

Dessert Pop-Up

This week’s recs did not originally include this event. How would a Sub Rosa Bakery all-dessert pop-up not immediately sell out? Inexplicably, but luckily for you, tickets are still available.

Sub Rosa’s Ben Lee will offer a three-course dessert tasting menu using seasonal ingredients, for a very accessible $25. Wine pairings also available!

Your Saturday night: catch the leaves and so-early sunset from Libby Hill Park, amble over to dinner at Dutch & Co. or The Roosevelt, then a casual three rounds of dessert.

PS: this.

VOL. 6   /  AN EXTRA HOUR

If you do anything this week, please vote on Tuesday, November 7. Learn about what’s on your ballot here.

Daylight saving time on November 5 affords us an extra hour before shortening our daylight for the season. Accordingly, this weekend in Richmond is absolutely action-packed. In a past newsletter, we gave you a head’s up on the Ledbury Quail Hunt this Saturday.

Now, a few more fun ideas to fill out that extra hour!

Holiday

Beer

What started as a modest beer has taken root as a major holiday tradition. Hardywood’s Gingerbread Stout releases Saturday, with seven variants to follow throughout the season! It’s that good. Everyone has a different favorite, so check out the full GBS lineup to see which appeals to you.

This weekend, Friday’s draft-only Christmas Pancakes sounds delicious, and Saturday is the main event: your first taste of the season’s Gingerbread Stout. Let the holidays officially begin!

Many know the beer; few know the full story behind its creation. Food & Wine got the scoop. Thirsty yet?

FF&F,

Focused

Fire, Flour & Fork (it rolls off the tongue eventually, promise) takes over Richmond’s restaurant scene this weekend, when visiting chefs partner with local talents for dinners, classes and food adventures galore. Of the many options, what to choose?

We’d consider skipping work for chef Joe Sparatta’s Friday pasta-making class. Saturday’s Class Pass offers another chance to load up on technique – and Gabrielle Hamilton of NYC’s Prune will keynote!

If you’d rather eat than cook, we’re food curious about Big Guns at Pasture, Carnaval Latino, Chaat It Up at Lehja, and Seed to Table at Sub Rosa.

Futures: For

The Ladies

We like to support people trying something new, whether it’s exploring our city or starting a new venture. In its first year, Rebelle Con is a new conference that supports women advancing their own ventures.

Over the course of a weekend, Rebelle Con will host conversations around Wellness, Money, Community and Creativity. You can opt for a quick fix via the workshops or fully immerse yourself hearing keynotes from Christian Siriano, Jessamyn Stanley and Tonya Rapley. We’re most intrigued by the Charging What You’re Worth workshop.

Ticket sales close November 5.

VOL. 5   /  HERE & THERE

Welcome to our first Here & There!

As much as we love Richmond, we love adventure more. And sometimes you’ve just gotta get out of town. We scout neighboring areas for their best day trips or long weekends — all within driving distance. Here & There newsletters will occasionally replace our weekly Richmond content.

As the leaves turn, head west to Charlottesville. Road trip!

Wine

Country

There’s just something about strolling the grounds at Veritas Vineyard & Winery, wine in hand, vistas of the Blue Ridge in every direction. Maybe the relaxed, friendly vibe stems from the family who runs the winery so personally.

During your tasting, pay special attention to Veritas’ Viognier and Petit Verdot grapes that thrive in Virginia. Veritas does offer food on-site, though you’re welcome to pack your own.

You could even stay on the property, at their intimate bed-and-breakfast, The Farmhouse at Veritas. There is a handful of rooms left for the season.

Climb

On

Picking up the pace, the season just begs for a brisk hike. How fortunate are we that picturesque trails are just an hour away?

Skip the mob scene at Old Rag. For an approachable challenge, the 9-mile Riprap Hollow tops off with a vista payoff at Chimney Rock. White Oak Canyon/Cedar Run is a similar length, winding by a series of waterfalls.

For something less athletic, Blackrock Summit has a worthwhile 1-mile circuit. Or you could always cruise the overlooks down Skyline Drive.

Narrowing Charlottesville’s bright culinary reputation to a few essentials:

LUNCH / Whether your destination is a winery or a mountain, stock up on elevated sandwiches, cheeses, charcuterie and bread at Feast! Also consider pie from The Pie Chest.

DINNER / A cozy gem of a restaurant, The Alley Light is indeed tucked in an alley. You’ll find French small plates and a healthy wine and cocktail list. You can’t order wrong.

BRUNCH / Soak up sins from the night before with tasty diner fare from Bluegrass Grill & Bakery, the perfect brunch dive.
