vol. 54 / cadence 🚲Getting into that work week rhythm...
VOL. 54 / CADENCE
Much love to those who filled out last week's survey. We'll use that feedback to serve you better as we head into our second year.
Some of you shared that you wished you could easily refer back to past issues. We've got you covered! Check out the newsletter archive on our site!
Now on to getting out there!
Pomona
Plants
We’ve been plant-obsessed for a while, so we were excited to hear that Pomona Plants has moved to a brand new home to expand and transform their company. Partnering with recently launched women-owned Hazel Witch Farm, the shop will feature herbs and flowers, along with native plants from TreeLab.
And Pomona isn’t taking over just any old space, but the former home of much-loved Roaring Pines. Pomona will continue the legacy of Roaring Pines' famed food and beverage service, while Roaring Pines’s Drew Dayberry continues to pursue his Dayberry Brooms company.
Enjoy a cozy retail experience and sip on something refreshing all in one. Visit this weekend and bring a new plant friend home!
The 1717 Innovation Center is at it again. On October 16, Capital One's Design Pro Bono team will host "lightning" talks about design for social impact. Six local leaders will each share how they leverage the power of design for positive impact in our community. You'll recognize a couple speakers from our past newsletters. Check the full line-up at the link below.
Tickets are just $10 and going fast, so we wanted to give you plenty of notice! Allow the talk to inspire vision for how you can make an impact in your sphere.
Calling all cyclists! Or, you know, people who like bikes. There's a new opportunity to put your hobby to work for good.
The inaugural Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Cycle for Life takes off from Hardywood West Creek on October 28 to benefit the search for a cure.
This event has a course for all levels of cyclist. For you athletes out there, the 65-mile route through some of good ole Virginia rolling hills should provide a nice challenge. If you prefer a more laid-back cadence, pedal to the metal along either the 15-mile or 22-mile route options.
Cap off the day at the finish-line reception with a Passion For A Cure beer, also benefitting CFF.
vol. 53 / birthday! 🎂It's our birthday. This email is a party.
VOL. 53 / BIRTHDAY!
Dear Member (that’s you),
Today is our one-year anniversary. Whether you’ve been a ride-or-die since Volume 1 or you just signed up this week, thank you so much for being a part of Here. Thank you for being hungry to explore our awesome city.
It’s our birthday, so we’ve got presents and cake. Seriously.
For you, the ultimate guide to celebrating birthdays in Richmond is below.
For us, we wanted to humbly ask you for a little present. Will you please share Here. with some of your fellow Richmond-obsessed friends? If you forward this email (copy hi@hereweekly.com) or share this Facebook post, we will enter you to win one of five $20 gift certificates to Shyndigz. Thank you in advance!
None of this would be possible without Ali's design genius, Kate's eye for photography and our small army of interns keeping us on track.
THANK YOU!! We appreciate you. More opportunities for cake below; read on!
Celebrate!
RVA
First stop on our birthday ideas tour: Celebrate! RVA.
What better way to celebrate your own birthday than to celebrate a child's birthday? We are fully enamored, head-over-heels crazy about the mission of Celebrate! RVA. This non-profit gives disadvantaged children a fun, safe, memorable birthday party.
Their next big party/fundraiser isn’t until March, but when your birthday rolls around, you could sponsor a child’s birthday for just $15. Or get a group of friends together to make birthday cards for the kids. Donate party supplies; volunteer. There are so many options. You can even enter a raffle to win a car, all proceeds benefitting Celebrate! RVA.
Another non-traditional birthday activity! Invite your friends to go on a run. But with art and beer.
Every Tuesday evening through the end of October, Sportsbackers is treating Richmond as a living gallery as they guide a run past some of our city’s sprawling street art and murals. The four-mile run begins and ends at a brewery or local watering hole, while looping through a neighborhood or two to show you the sights. Every week they tackle a new part of town.
By the time you’ve finished those four miles, you’ll have earned that celebratory beer!
And sometimes, you just want to go out with a bunch of friends or a date to celebrate over a drink, a dinner or a dessert. When it’s your birthday or your turn to plan a friend's birthday, use this list for a little inspiration. We narrowed down the endless options to a few of our personal birthday-appropriate favs…
vol. 51 / amped 🔊Volume 51? That means we've almost been doing this for a year! Big things about to go down to celebrate...
VOL. 51 / AMPED UP
Hurricane Florence slightly changed our coverage plans this week; she's impacting many plans up and down the coast. As you hunker down and ride out the storm this weekend, consider booking some of these forward-looking happenings.
Stay safe out there!
Rebelle
Community
Last year’s Rebelle Con is making its first outing as the expanded concept, "Rebelle Community," with this coming Wednesday’s panel discussion.
With Instagram being such a central component to most marketing strategies these days, Team Rebelle handpicked panelists to offer insight on their success stories. These are accounts with depth, more than just selfies and hashtags, helmed by some local talents who have put in the work over the years to build their audiences.
Lessons Learned from Social Media Influencers will feature Brittany Mullins, Janie Medley, Amber Karnes, and Lex Daddio, as they spill their secrets on how to run a successful and fun business Instagram.
A major player on the Richmond scene, The Massey Alliance was founded to raise awareness of and support research for VCU Massey Cancer Center, one of Virginia’s leading cancer research facilities.
This organization hosts a number of amazing fundraisers year-round. Of the lot, we have our eyes on the annual Massey on the River on Mayo Island.
Get in on the action and join 1,000+ guests for live music by Three Sheets to the Wind, a silent auction, craft beer, wine, dinner and desserts. Last year, the event raised $90,000. Now that is a party.
This pop-up was originally scheduled for this weekend, but we still think it merits attention, so put on your calendar now!
The pop-up masterminds behind Gold Cart have the unique ability to subvert any theme and make it crazy cool. This weekend, they’re taking on back-to-school nostalgia!
The team will transform Helen’s on Main Street with this throwback of amped-up lunch lady food, fun cocktails and dollar beers - you know, as only Gold Cart can deliver. Peep the full menu on Facebook or Instagram. Bonus: the pop-up will benefit Richmond Public Schools!
Reservations aren’t necessary, but we recommend heading out early before popular menu items run out.
