Daylight saving time on November 5 affords us an extra hour before shortening our daylight for the season. Accordingly, this weekend in Richmond is absolutely action-packed. In a past newsletter, we gave you a head’s up on the Ledbury Quail Hunt this Saturday.  Now, a few more fun ideas to fill out that extra hour! Holiday Beer What started as a modest beer has taken root as a major holiday tradition. Hardywood’s Gingerbread Stout releases Saturday, with seven variants to follow throughout the season! It’s that good. Everyone has a different favorite, so check out the full GBS lineup to see which appeals to you. This weekend, Friday’s draft-only Christmas Pancakes sounds delicious, and Saturday is the main event: your first taste of the season’s Gingerbread Stout. Let the holidays officially begin!  Many know the beer; few know the full story behind its creation. Food & Wine got the scoop. Of the many options, what to choose? We’d consider skipping work for chef Joe Sparatta’s Friday pasta-making class. Saturday’s Class Pass offers another chance to load up on technique – and Gabrielle Hamilton of NYC’s Prune will keynote! In its first year, Rebelle Con is a new conference that supports women advancing their own ventures. Over the course of a weekend, Rebelle Con will host conversations around Wellness, Money, Community and Creativity. You can opt for a quick fix via the workshops or fully immerse yourself hearing keynotes from Christian Siriano, Jessamyn Stanley and Tonya Rapley. VOL. 5   /  HERE & THERE Welcome to our first Here & There! As much as we love Richmond, we love adventure more. And sometimes you’ve just gotta get out of town. We scout neighboring areas for their best day trips or long weekends — all within driving distance. Here & There newsletters will occasionally replace our weekly Richmond content. As the leaves turn, head west to Charlottesville. Road trip! Wine Country There’s just something about strolling the grounds at Veritas Vineyard & Winery, wine in hand, vistas of the Blue Ridge in every direction. Maybe the relaxed, friendly vibe stems from the family who runs the winery so personally.  During your tasting, pay special attention to Veritas’ Viognier and Petit Verdot grapes that thrive in Virginia. Veritas does offer food on-site, though you’re welcome to pack your own. You could even stay on the property, at their intimate bed-and-breakfast, The Farmhouse at Veritas. How fortunate are we that picturesque trails are just an hour away? Skip the mob scene at Old Rag. For an approachable challenge, the 9-mile Riprap Hollow tops off with a vista payoff at Chimney Rock. White Oak Canyon/Cedar Run is a similar length, winding by a series of waterfalls.  For something less athletic, Blackrock Summit has a worthwhile 1-mile circuit. Also consider pie from The Pie Chest. DINNER / A cozy gem of a restaurant, The Alley Light is indeed tucked in an alley. You’ll find French small plates and a healthy wine and cocktail list. You can’t order wrong. In early 2018, The Jackdaw will give way to permanent restaurant Tiny Victory. We want to soak up the final Jackdaw pop-ups over the next couple months. Next up: Filipino-inspired, five-course, small-plate marathon Ang Sarap! at Citizen. Follow their site and Instagram for updates. Breakaway RVA is gearing up for their last ride of the year, going all out with a Halloween costume contest and two spooky stops. Bikers start from four neighborhoods, uniting at a surprise mid-point before moving on to the final destination, usually involving some alcohol. Anybody on any bike can handle the leisurely ride, and kids are welcome. You’ll cover 4-8 miles one-way. Bring a bike light for the night ride home.
